Loc maintenance, demystified
Healthy locs are less about constant fussing and more about the right routine at the right intervals. Here is what we actually recommend.
Retwist on a schedule that fits your hair, usually every four to six weeks. Over-twisting is one of the most common causes of thinning at the root, so resist the urge to tighten every new growth the moment you see it.
Wash your locs. Clean locs lock better and smell fresh; the myth that locs should not be washed is exactly that. Use a residue-free cleanser and make sure they dry fully to avoid that mildew smell.
Detox every few months to clear buildup from heavy products and hard water. A simple soak leaves locs lighter and brighter.
Between appointments, sleep in a satin or silk wrap, keep heavy oils to a minimum, and bring us anything that feels off early — small issues are easy to fix before they set in.
