Knotless vs box braids: which is better for your hair?

Knotless and box braids look similar in a photo, but they feel very different on your head. Here is how to choose.

The knot is the whole story

Traditional box braids start with a small knot at the root. That knot is what can pull and feel tight for the first few days. Knotless braids feed the hair in gradually, so there is no knot and far less tension from the very first braid.

Which should you pick?

Choose knotless if you have a tender scalp, a finer hairline, or you want a flat, natural finish that lies down straight away. It is gentler and more comfortable to sleep in.

Choose box braids if you love a bolder, more defined root and a classic look. They are a little quicker to install.

Caring for your edges

Whichever you choose, braids should never hurt. If a style feels too tight, tell your braider — gentle is the whole point of how we work. Ready to decide? Browse every style and price or book your appointment.
